Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job or nose surgery, is a highly popular plastic surgery procedure, ranking among the top five procedures performed in the US. The procedure typically involves sculpting of the nasal cartilage and bone to reshape and resize the nose in proportion to other facial features.
When performed by an experienced cosmetic surgeon, the procedure can help a patient achieve improved balance of facial features and even correction of functional defects in some cases. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Gary Motykie performs rhinoplasty and other procedures on patients in Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and surrounding communities.
Types of Rhinoplasty
Depending on a patient’s individual aesthetic goals, the appropriate rhinoplasty plastic surgery technique can be adopted.
Reduction Rhinoplasty
This is among the most common types of rhinoplasty procedures, which is designed to resize the nose to a more proportionate level. The surgery can be used to reduce or remove the bumps on the nasal bridge, define an elongated nasal tip, or reshape flared nostrils. A small amount of cartilage or bone from the nose will be removed to achieve the targeted results.
Augmentation Rhinoplasty
This type of rhinoplasty will involve tissue or bone grafting to augment the nose. The cosmetic surgeon may use cartilage from the nasal septum or other areas to build up the nasal bridge or nasal tip. If sufficient cartilage is not available in the nose or other sites, synthetic materials may be used to achieve the augmentation. Dr. Motykie receives patients from Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and nearby areas for this procedure.
Post-Traumatic Rhinoplasty
Following a nasal injury, the surgeon may perform a post-traumatic rhinoplasty surgery. The procedure can be used to correct both aesthetic and structural anomalies. Nose straightening and correcting of the nasal septum are commonly performed using this procedure. A fractured nose may also be re-set with this technique.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty
If the patient has lost all or part of the nose following skin cancer, accident or another illness, reconstructive rhinoplasty may be recommended. The surgeon will rebuild the nose using flat techniques, skin grafting, and other advanced techniques. The procedure may involve multiple surgeries over several months
Ethnic Rhinoplasty
This is a specialized form of rhinoplasty that is customized to meet the aesthetic needs of ethnic patients. The procedure may be performed on patients of Asian, African American, Hispanic, or Middle Eastern descent. The surgeon will ensure that the essential ethnicity and identity of the face remains intact while achieving the patient’s aesthetic goals.
Recovery
Most patients will be ready to return to work or resume normal activities in about 10 to 14 days following rhinoplasty. Strenuous activity should be avoided for at least a month. Results with rhinoplasty are predictable and will usually be permanent.
