Any plastic surgery procedure is a complex and personal journey involving a lot of commitment and discipline. Thorough preparation can make this journey safer and easier. Leading cosmetic surgeon Dr. Gary Motykie provides a wide range of surgical procedures to patients in Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and surrounding locations.
Choose the Right Timing for your Surgery
In an elective surgery, mostly the patient will have a choice to schedule the procedure as convenient. The best time to undergo the surgery would be when you have least amount of other pressing engagements and distractions. Choose of a period when you are in fantastic physical and mental health to have the best chance for a speedy recovery.
Focus on Healthy Dietary Supplements
Fortify your immune system with healthy dietary supplements before and after the plastic surgery. You can take supplements of essential elements such as vitamin A, vitamin C, zinc, selenium and copper to minimize infection risks. However, consult with your surgeon in advance for these supplements.
Eat More Lean Proteins
Add a lot of high quality lean proteins to your daily diet such as fish, poultry, lean meats, and beans and legumes. With extra protein intake, your body will have the strength to build new tissue and blood vessels, repair injured tissue and generate new cells that support wound repair.
Do not Use Herbal Meds
Avoid the use of herbal medications and supplements for at least two weeks prior to the surgery. Drug interactions, excessive bleeding, cardiovascular problems and interference with anesthesia may occur with some of these supplements.
Use Arnica Montana
Talk to your surgeon about using Arnica Montana after the surgery to treat bruising and swelling in the soft tissue. It can be used in both topical and oral use forms.
Drink Plenty of Water
Stay hydrated in the weeks before the surgery. You may drink at least six to eight glasses of water a day. But do not drink water for about eight hours prior to the surgery.
Refrain from Using Aspirin and NSAIDs
If you have been taking any blood thinners such as aspirin or anti-inflammatories, stop using them about two weeks before the surgery. These anti-coagulants can increase the risk of bleeding.
Do not Smoke
If you smoke, you will have to stop the habit at least two weeks before the surgery. Smoking interferes with healing because the oxygen supply to the repair cells is restricted. It also increases the risk of complications during surgery.
Practice Relaxation Techniques
Practice meditation to reduce stress, join a yoga class, or listen to soothing music in the days preceding the surgery. Continue to use these techniques during the post-op recovery phase as well.
Enlist Family Support
Create a support structure of friends and family to remain less stressful before and after the surgery. Emotional as well as physical support of loved ones will make your surgical journey easier. Dr. Motykie is an experienced cosmetic surgeon receiving patients from Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Angeles, and nearby areas.
