Microneedling

Introduction to Microneedling

Also referred to as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), microneedling is a non-invasive skin rejuvenation treatment that is FDA-approved for the treatment of aging and damaged skin. Microneedling produces microscopic channels in the dermis to stimulate the body’s natural wound-healing mechanisms and the production of collagen, allowing for optimal skin cell renewal and producing a thickening of the skin by up to 80 percent. This helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles, scars, and hyperpigmentation (skin darkening). Although there are numerous microneedling products on the market, Dr. Motykie is pleased to offer microneedling treatments with the SkinPen™, as this product has a proven track record of consistently producing exceptional, long-lasting results. What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is ideally suited for patients who wish to revitalize and refresh the appearance of their skin but are not quite ready for harsh, ablative therapies, laser skin resurfacing, or cosmetic surgery. This gentle anti-aging therapy boosts collagen production to facilitate natural skin renewal while simultaneously resurfacing the skin to enhance its texture, making it tighter, and reducing wrinkles, fine lines, scars, and sunspots.

Microneedling with PRP (Add-On)

Microneedling with PRP is a combined procedure that makes the results of microneedling more efficient. First, the practitioner will draw a blood sample and then spin it in a centrifuge to obtain the PRP (platelet-rich plasma). PRP is plasma, which has a higher density of platelets than other components of the blood. It is used to help speed recovery and repair as it contains proteins, including growth factors and cytokines, which help skin tissue repair itself.

After the practitioner uses the SkinPen to prick the skin, they will then apply PRP to these microholes to encourage collagen production and cell reproduction.

Your Microneedling Journey with Dr. GARY MOTYKIE

What’s the First Step?

The first step in getting microneedling in Los Angeles at Motykie Med Spa is to schedule an in-person consultation with board-certified Dr. Motykie. During your appointment, Dr. Motykie will speak to you about your medical history, current medications, aesthetic goals, and expectations. It is important to be open with your history because some past treatments and medications, such as certain acne medications or topical retinoid prescriptions, can interfere with the effectiveness of the microneedling procedure. Dr. Motykie will then examine your target area and recommend if microneedling is indeed the best way forward for you.

If you both decide it is, Dr. Motykie will craft a treatment plan for you. Our patient coordinator will be able to schedule your treatment based on the plan, help you with pricing options, and share any pre and post-operative instructions with you.

What to Expect on the Day of Microneedling Treatment

On the day of your microneedling treatment in West Hollywood, Dr. Motykie and his staff will receive you, get you settled in the treatment room, and go over your plan once more to ensure you have no further questions or concerns.

Once all is confirmed, the practitioner will begin by applying a topical analgesic to numb the skin and keep you comfortable. Once the numbing has taken effect, the practitioner will move the SkinPen™ across the target area, making fine microscopic punctures. If you have chosen to get the PRP add-on, your blood would have been drawn, and the plasma readied ahead of this part of the procedure. Then, the PRP would be injected into the micropunctures.

The procedure is finished once the pen has been moved over the target area for the desired duration. On the microscopic level, the skin has been triggered to increase its collagen and elastin production, leading to rejuvenated skin. If the PRP add-on has been chosen, the platelets will help speed up this process.

On average and without complications, a microneedling treatment can last between five minutes to an hour.

Microneedling Recovery

For the first three to seven days after your microneedling treatment, your skin may feel tight, warm, or rough and take on a reddish hue (like a mild sunburn). Most patients observe firmer, smoother skin and improvement in the appearance of scarring and skin discoloration after a series of three to five microneedling treatments spaced at four-week intervals.
