Breast Reduction

Introduction to Breast Reduction

Women with large, sagging breasts often deal with some pretty uncomfortable issues. Neck and back pain can become part of daily life, along with awkward shoulder grooves from tight bras and those annoying bra strap indentations. Plus, the skin irritation or rashes that can develop under the breasts—yikes! Finding clothes that fit well is another struggle, and many women feel self-conscious or “top-heavy,” which can really affect confidence. The good news? After breast reduction surgery, most of these problems can fade away. Many women experience newfound freedom, finding it easier to be active, exercise, and even enjoy activities that felt out of reach before. It’s all about regaining comfort and confidence!

Dr. Motykie is a world-renowned plastic surgeon providing breast reduction surgery for Beverly Hills & Los Angeles patients from his state-of-the-art West Hollywood practice.

What is Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to achieve a more balanced breast size and shape. Many women opt for this surgery to alleviate physical discomfort, such as neck and back pain, poor posture, and skin irritations caused by heavy breasts.

During the procedure, a skilled surgeon like Dr. Motykie carefully makes incisions to create smaller, lighter breasts that are proportionate to the body. Sometimes, liposuction is a less invasive approach, depending on the individual’s anatomy and goals.

What Are the Benefits of Breast Reduction?

Many find relief from neck, back, and shoulder pain that can be associated with large breasts. Breast reduction can also help improve one’s posture by alleviating strain on the spine.

Who Are the Best Candidates for Breast Reduction?

The ideal candidates for breast reduction surgery are people who experience physical discomfort due to their larger breasts, such as chronic pain in the neck, back, or shoulders, or those struggling with bra strap indentations and skin irritations beneath the breasts.

It’s essential that they have completed their physical development, as breast size can change over time. Women who are considering breast reduction for cosmetic reasons or to enhance their body proportions are also suitable candidates. Ultimately, a consultation with a qualified surgeon can help determine if breast reduction is the right choice for individual needs and goals.

Your Breast Reduction Journey with Dr. GARY MOTYKIE

What’s the First Step?

To help you envision your desired outcome, Dr. Motykie may provide a “breast book” with photos of various breast shapes and sizes. This allows you to explore different options and discuss which approach may best suit your goals. You are also welcome to bring your own reference photos from magazines or online sources to give a clearer picture of the look you’re aiming for. Dr. Motykie finds this visual discussion, along with reviewing his portfolio of previous surgeries, is far more effective than other methods like bra stuffing or visual imaging for helping you determine the breast size and shape that feels right for you.

Dr. Motykie will take the time to understand your goals for breast reduction surgery and explain how the procedure can address your specific needs and expectations. You’ll also have the opportunity to ask any questions about the surgery and discuss its potential benefits for your unique case. It’s a good idea to come prepared with written questions and a general understanding of the procedure so you can make the most of your time with Dr. Motykie.

What to Expect on the Day of Breast Reduction Surgery

Before your surgery, you’ll have a chance to discuss any part of the procedure or recovery with Dr. Motykie. On the day of surgery, you’ll change into a gown, and Dr. Motykie will mark your chest while you’re standing to ensure accuracy in areas like nipple height and breast fold placement. Be sure to wear loose, comfortable clothing, like sweatpants and a front-zip shirt, for easy changing after surgery.

For most breast augmentation procedures, you’ll be under general anesthesia for your comfort and safety. Dr. Motykie believes that general anesthesia is the best option for revision breast surgery because it ensures relaxation of the chest muscles and allows you to be positioned upright during surgery for accurate assessment of breast volume and symmetry. Only board-certified anesthesiologists will handle your anesthesia, and you may receive medication beforehand to help you feel relaxed.

The surgery typically takes about an hour and is performed at a fully accredited AAAASF surgical facility, ensuring your safety and privacy. Deep vein thrombosis precautions, including anti-embolic stockings and compression devices, are always taken during the procedure. Once you’re asleep, Dr. Motykie will use the pre-marked guidelines to remove excess breast tissue, fat, and skin. Your areolas will be reduced and lifted to a higher, more youthful position without detaching the nipples. You’ll be sat upright to confirm breast symmetry and nipple positioning before closing the incisions with dissolvable stitches under the skin. After surgery, small tapes will be placed over the incisions, and you’ll be fitted with a surgical bra and compression wrap to minimize swelling and bruising.

Breast Reduction Recovery

After your surgery, you’ll be brought to a recovery area to rest and fully wake from anesthesia. Nurses will be by your side to monitor your recovery, offer pain medication, and provide small amounts of water or ice chips. Once you’re fully awake, you can either head home with a responsible adult or stay overnight at an outpatient recovery retreat with 24-hour nursing care.

The best way to rest after surgery is in a recliner with your head elevated. It’s normal to need frequent bathroom trips the first night due to the fluids given during surgery. Keep your dressings in place until your follow-up visits the next morning, when Dr. Motykie will change them and provide additional instructions for the week. Some discomfort is expected the first night, but it can be managed with pain medication. Most of your stitches will dissolve on their own and are covered with surgical tape, which should remain in place for the first week.
