Your own personal abdominal contouring procedure should be designed and tailored to your own specific anatomy and desired goals from surgery. In determining the proper abdominal rejuvenation procedure for you, it is imperative that your surgeon assess each of the three layers of your abdomen individually. Once the layers that could benefit from surgical intervention have been identified, the appropriate procedure to correct your particular problems can be assigned and performed. The three most common procedures are listed below and include liposuction, a mini-abdominoplasty and a full abdominoplasty.
Liposuction: If your only concern is localized fat in the abdominal area without excess
skin or loose abdominal muscles, liposuction alone is the appropriate procedure to
perform since it is dedicated to solely removing excess fat in order to contour “trouble”
areas such as “spare tires”, “muffin tops” and “love handles.”The best candidates for
liposuction are men and women in good health that have pockets of fat that have not
responded to a proper diet and exercise program (To learn more about liposuction follow

Mini-abdominoplasty: If your aesthetic concerns include both excess fat in the
abdominal area and loose skin/stretch marks limited to below your belly button, the
appropriate corrective procedure is a mini-abdominoplasty (mini-tummy tuck). A mini-
abdominoplasty can remove some of the stretch marks from below your belly button
and tighten the loose skin of your lower abdomen. The upper abdomen is not addressed
and the belly button is not relocated during this procedure. Most plastic surgeons will
feel comfortable performing abdominal and waist liposuction in conjunction with your
mini-abdominoplasty in order to match the contour of your waistline, hips and back to
your new, tight abdomen. Don’t be fooled, there is no true “mini-incision”, only a “mini-
abdominoplasty” in which the muscles of the upper abdomen are not tightened and the
belly button is not relocated. ALL abdominoplasty incisions should be made as “mini” as
possible whether a “mini” or a “full” abdominoplasty is being performed. The true length
of your incision is determined by the experience of your surgeon and the degree of your
own personal abdominal skin laxity.
Full Abdominoplasty: If your aesthetic concerns involve skin laxity of your upper
and lower abdomen, excess abdominal fat and stretched abdominal muscles, the
appropriate corrective procedure is most likely a full abdominoplasty (full tummy tuck).
A full abdominoplasty is a procedure that can reverse damage involving all three
layers of the abdomen due to either prior weight fluctuations and/or pregnancy. A full
abdominoplasty addresses a protruding, stretched-out abdomen by repairing weakened,
separated abdominal muscles, removing excess skin through an abdominal incision
placed below the bikini line and contouring of abdominal fat though liposuction of the
abdomen and waistline. The belly button is moved during a full abdominoplasty and
any stretch marks located below the belly button can be removed during the procedure.
The most common patients to require a full abdominoplasty are women that have had
multiple prior pregnancies. In these types of patients, the full abdominoplasty is often
combined with other body contouring procedures such as breasts surgery, liposuction
and/or a Brazilian butt lift. This combination of abdominal, breast and body surgeries is
often called a “Mommy Makeover.” (To learn more about Mommy Makeovers click here)
There are several different locations for the tummy tuck incision that are currently being
performed worldwide. The primary difference in these techniques is the shape and location of
the skin incision although the goals of every technique are typically the same: removal of excess skin, repair of separated abdominal muscles and lipo-contouring of the waistline. Although an abdominoplasty requires an incision on the lower abdomen, it is strategically placed low enough to be hidden underneath your bikini or underwear line. In addition, there have been significant strides made in incision treatment and scar management including topical scar ointments (Mederma, ScarGuard, bioCorneum), silicone sheeting and laser treatments that were not available in the past.
In order to determine if an abdominoplasty is the right procedure for you, it is important to have a proper consultation by a board certified plastic surgeon.
