Occurrence of excess fat deposits in the back of the upper arms is a common problem. It can be difficult to eliminate this fat with exercise or diet.
An experienced surgeon can provide liposuction cosmetic surgery to tone the outer and inner parts of the upper arm, and also the biceps and shoulders. Liposuction of the arms is designed to sculpt the arm and improve its overall shape and appearance in a safe and sustainable way.
Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Gary Motykie provides arms liposuction to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and surrounding locations.
Need for Arms Liposuction
Patients choose to undergo arms liposuction for a number of reasons:
- To achieve slimmer arms that can tone easily.
- To remove the excess flab in the arms, especially at the back of the arms.
- To have more photogenic look.
- To remove the excess fat that might hang down from the back of the upper arms.
Surgical Procedure
The surgeon will perform an arms liposuction plastic surgery using local anesthesia in most cases. Once the arm area is numbed, the surgeon will begin the procedure by placing minor incisions in discreet locations to minimize subsequent scarring.
If the patient wishes not to feel or remember anything during the surgery, they may choose to have general or twilight anesthesia instead of “awake” liposuction.
Techniques for Arms Liposuction
Liposuction of the arms is aimed at only removing excess fat. It will not tighten or remove any loose or hanging skin around the arms. If the patient’s skin has enough elasticity, it would tighten on its own. Such patients are ideal candidates for arms liposuction.
However, if the arms skin requires tightening, the surgeon may recommend an additional procedure to reduce sagging skin, such as an arms lift.
In recent years, many patients have shown interest in receiving laser liposuction for arms fat removal as an alternative to the traditional liposuction surgery.
Laser liposuction for the arms is not necessarily “safer” or “better” than tumescent liposuction, but it could help to make the procedure more targeted and less invasive. However, just as with other forms of liposuction, laser lipo is not meant to tighten loose upper arm skin.
Liposuction for arms could be the most effective solution to attain the slim, toned look of the upper arms. However, patients should know that the technique of arms liposuction does not matter as much as the skill and experience of the surgeon.
An accomplished body contouring surgeon will recommend the best surgical technique for the patient’s unique needs. This is vital to achieving desirable outcomes.
Recovery after an Arms Liposuction Surgery
Temporary side effects following an arms liposuction may include swelling, bruising, and a changed sensation, including tingling and numbness.
Recovery time will vary from one patient to another, but most people are able to go back to work within a few days. Bruising is likely to resolve in 2-4 weeks, while swelling from the treated sites will resolve in about 1-2 months.
Arm Lift
Depending on the patient’s needs, the surgeon may combine arms liposuction with an arms lift surgery. To remove the loose skin in the upper arms, brachioplasty or upper arm lift procedure is the proper and normal route to take.
However, patients should be aware that it can leave a scar down the inside of the upper arm. The scar will remain concealed when the arms are down at the sides, but may be visible when the patient raises the arm.
